Geometry, geography and procrastination

This is a personal project created during a very dry creative spell while I was employed at my first architecture internship. Needless to say, CAD became my best friend. From my tracing excercies I soon had a self-made vector map of the United States. I used this diverse set of shapes as a vocabulary for a graphic design exercise.

A Semiotic Experiment

By treating the outlines of these territories as set of parts, I was able to distance the connection between the shape and the meaning of that shape. I arranged the states according to composition to define new and unique amalgams of a system of symbols. Much like jamming letters of the alphabet together to create new characters.

With the resultant new states I decided to push the designs into different product exports. One of the most successful of these endevours is their implementation as wall art.
